A key substance in green tea has been found more potent than any drug on the market in targeting a cancer causing protein. Green tea's epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). It binds to the malicious protein HSP90 thus mitigating the cascade of events that lead to cancer. July 21, 2005 Washington, D.C. -- Recent studies have once again touted the positive benefits of green tea. Strangely, Americans are slow to adopt this healthy drink. Our Asian counterparts consume large quantities and that fact may contribute to the lower incidences of cancer in those countries. This past July 14th at the International Research Conference on Food Nutrition and Cancer in Washington, 6 scientific papers linked green tea to the prevention of cancer. The results were also published in the journal Biochemistry. [Green tea's] EGCG targets HSP90, binds directly to it, and keeps it from passing on signals that can start the cancer process. -- Professor Thomas A. Gasiewicz, University of Rochester Researchers from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) presented evidence that a major component in green tea may mitigate the cancer process in an unforeseen manner.
