The answer to curtailing the aging process, especially the mental deterioration that accompanies senescence, may be closer than imagined - even contained in familiar beverages. According to UnknownCountry.com, researchers at the University of South Florida have found that green tea may protect the brain against Alzheimer’s and other age-related conditions.
The Journal of Neuroscience, recently reported that a study by researchers at the University of South Florida found that a component of the tea known as EGCG prevented Alzheimer's-like damage in the brains of mice genetically programmed to develop the disease. It apparently decreased production of beta-amyloid, which can accumulate abnormally in the brain and lead to nerve damage and memory loss.
Green tea also contains many antioxidants, including flavonoids that protect against free radical damage to the brain. Researchers are recommending taking a concentrated green tea pill, rather than just drinking the beverage. Another study is said to show positive effects of the tea extract as an anti-cancer agent.
